I’m sorry for this buuuut I agree with most of what you said…except the bikes in the road. Where you have to go is irrelevant, no rational person wants to go 20mph (in a 45) down a country road. It happens where I live you can’t pass them because they are in the middle of the road and it’s curvy so you can’t see around it.

That French pomo fag at the beginning sounds very much like JG Ballard who was the leading exponent of “new wave” sci-fi in the 60s-70s that was basically critiquing modernity. Cars as symbols & literally vehicles of atomised alienation & autistic withdrawal from reality. Crash is probably the best known, also Concrete Island. A very eastern perspective. Cities in the west are far apart. I don’t want to sit on a train for 5 days to get from Oklahoma City to Albuquerque as in makes 56 stops along the way to pick up Indians and drug addicts who can’t afford cars, when I can drive there in 8 hours. What about people who drive to different sites every day for work? Ride my bike around for 12 hours to do what I can do in an hour in a car? Here’s an aesthetic appreciation of train riding that wasn’t directly covered in the podcast, even though there was a lot of discussion of trees and such.
