I just have to say, this is a really good podcast and a good addition to TRS.
I drive to a park to run. It is not safe to run along the streets and I don’t want to risk getting hit. Towards the end of a run you don’t think as well because you’re tired so you’re prone to lapses in judgement ie: should I or should I not cross this street now.

Good episode, big agree. Also having good planning/zoning policy and efficient public transit doesn’t mean nobody is allowed to drive anymore. A lot of people in Europe and Asia still drive. It just gives you the option to not have to drive for every single trip.

Usually, I try as best as I can to use the car less, places like Europe, Asia and even parts of Latin America had natural (colonial) planning, that means no use for parking.
In the suburb I used to live in it would take me an hour to walk a mile to the store just because of traffic lights so even though I can walk to places because of side walks it’s highly inefficient. Traffic lights are another thing that prevents being able to walk in cities.
A friend of mine married an avid cyclist, he spent hundreds on bikes, gear, replacement parts etc. he’s dead now. He became so obsessed with cycling that the last time I saw him he looked like the crypt keeper, he literally cycled himself to death. Lol. Anyway I enjoy my car, my privacy and safety.
The problem I’m trying to get through your thick skulls is that if everyone goes with their impulses which are largely facilitated by technology, we become a society of shut-in hermits that don’t have any stake in the larger world and never interact with the outdoors.

Yes. FYI I just got back from the grocery store. We drove in a lovely car. We had a trunk full of groceries. I do live an almost all White area, but I like to go in the evening when it’s not crowded. It takes us minutes to get there and back IN A CAR. During the scamdemic, we’d drive 40 minutes to a very out of the way local grocery store than was always well stocked.

I drive trucks all around the country. definitely noticed the correlation between lack of sidewalks, and fat chicks. just the population in general. some of these states like Kentucky, Louisiana, usually in the South where it rains a lot. I find Boring Company’s ideas for traffic reduction in built up areas pretty interesting, and the idea that “it’s just a subway with extra steps” misses a lot of context. Alex and James, you may find this interesting. They took old aerial photos of US cities from about 1950 or so and overlaid them with the a modern version of the same image. You can slide back and forth to see the change. Cincinnati is particularly striking. Entire neighborhoods were wiped out by freeways, sportsball stadiums, convention centers, and commie block housing projects. And the vast majority of those old neighborhoods were ethnic White.
