About 10 years ago I was trying to convince my wife we should vacation in North Korea. Sweden was one of the few countries with an embassy there, it would not be cheap but I started planning and saving to go within a few years. Then Covid happened, then Sweden joined NATO, and now going to DPRK is like Mount Everest: still difficult and expensive, but they have a huge tourist industry. I wanted to be special! 🙁

The little octopus on the globe gets me every time I actually look at the video
Same, I love the set-up. Still remember when Melissa (?) came with the globe and Mike’s eyes lit up: “Can I have this?” lol
And the octopus *chef’s kiss*
In rural America, you’re getting toxic extraction, warehouses, section 8, porcessing centres or all of the above. All of these destroy the environment and bring in browns. Avoiding this is difficult. If the area has any natural beauty, you can try recreational tourism (pretty White). If it has old stuff, try historic preservation (very White). Local politics is just landowners feuding about zoning laws and land use. They have to be convinced that doing the “White” thing is more profitable.
It’s kulaks all the way down from downtown to the sticks – everyone is chasing money and every one of their values and supposed preferences is for sale – at Wal-Mart prices.
Only the small minority of people who aren’t either spiritual greedheads or so terrified of precarity that they’re functional greedheads have potential as decent community material.
It’s bad. The vast majority of Americans are not people you want to live with.
