In my area there about 9 rock radio stations. Two of those stations mix in newer alternative and one mixes in newer “hard” rock (basically modern butt rock). Nirvana didn’t take itself seriously the way Metallica did. But their songs are more simple and memorable than Metallica or Pearl Jam. The riffs and melodies for Come As You Are, About A Girl, Lithium, In Bloom, etc. are so simple in retrospect. But interestingly, it’s incredibly difficult to achieve. It’s difficult to articulate, but two words I can use to describe Nirvana are accidental masterpieces.
Soundgarden and Badmotorfinger were the best band and album out of that scene and era.
Those two don’t have anything on Alice In Chains.

Never been a Soundgarden fan, but as a Seattleite I have all the important grunge LPs – Badmotorfinger mainly for the first three tracks, the only other one that sticks in my mind is Holy Water. I always thought that was heavier and more grunge than their usual bullshit. Never liked Chris Cornell’s voice but will relisten to “room”..
I used to listen to that album on repeat 25-30 years ago. Every song is awesome.
As a Seattleite I hate Soundgarden, but they have always been well loved up here. I prefer the Seattle favorites AIC, Mudhoney (always been well loved here) and Screaming trees (Mark Lanegan was a Seattle favorite). We all grew up on Nirvana out here, and for nostalgia sake I love Bleach – but I’ve never heard anyone compare them to Metallica. This feels the same to me as “finding” music by hearing it on the radio, I’m not sure TikTok is really to blame. The quality of music that goes viral on the platform is different, of course, but its the same hot 100 slop as would get popular in another time. I regularly find underground stuff I like on TikTok as well, you just have to get in the right algorithm.
