There is a new strategy for AI training called reinforcement learning (RL) which helps AI learn to reason beyond statistical probabilities, which uses punishment/reward mechanics. That is currently how AI researchers are trying to improve reasoning ability. “Old” critiques of AI reasoning are quickly becoming antiquated.
This sounds great in the promotional material but it’s just vapor-speak unless and until you see results that line up with the hype.
They have developed benchmark tests for AI reasoning. They have already proved that this works which is why they are doing it.
You can literally just use a paid frontier model on thinking mode and watch it reason. People oblivious to this fact clearly just haven’t done that, or have barely done it and didn’t really test it out thoroughly.
I was able to ask AI today “what is the constitutional basis for taxation” and got a response in a few seconds citing the exact section of the constitution. If I have several questions about taxation or the constitution, I as a human with an overarching goal can learn more about my specific topics quicker than I could otherwise. Did Google or Apple Maps help people drive around more efficiently than using a paper map? All the information was already there on the paper map too. Of course, now nobody can read a regular map. No one is saying AI is useless. We’re saying that you are either guzzling or selling crypto-tier hype about it.
AI causes unemployment for the same reason tractors did. We’re not being told to cargo-cult tractors. There aren’t entire fiction sub-genres about them and thankfully very few people think their tractor literally loves them.
The example is simplistic as purely benefit of AI in itself but the point of it is to refute the claim that it doesn’t help us learn faster. I can find information faster and that’s part of learning. For now, you need to ask an AI to explain the concept of “diminishing returns” to you along with “limits to evidence based reasoning”.
There are faulty assumptions baked into that whole list. “Understand” is being misused both as to what the AI does, can or will do – and what the humans using AI are achieving. We can already do that with jailbroken offline open source LLMs if you sequentially feed it source data and make it create some summary document it can use as reference for any arguments.
