I can speculate on the rise of autism too. It’s diagnosed more, possibly too much and the internet makes people mimic autistic symptoms. EZ. You don’t have to buy my snake oil for that explanation either.

I watched an interview with a psychologist who explained that when people are feeling off there’s no easy way to explain that feeling to someone so they draw from what he called the “symptom pool”. This means they compare their feelings to what they’ve heard about and it ends up falling into these Iil- defined categories that are used to describe mental illness.
It’s not that there’s nothing wrong but lacking an ability to adequately describe it results in comparisons to something they’ve heard of which would be the illness in whatever the current symptom pool is.
