I’m going to disagree and well ackshually the whole Northern European you’re on your own bootstrapping approach to courtship and marriage. You weren’t on your own, you were a member of various social groups and communities and it was through those you paired up and married off. That’s essentially how my parents met and I’m pretty sure that’s how most people of their generation did. One of the problems with modern dating, and this goes for both sexes, is that people need their partner to be their best friend as well because of everyone being more generally isolated.
