Actually, my parents didn’t want me watching the Simpsons either. Of course their instincts were correct. That show is as subversive jew cringe as seinfeld.

I also wasn’t capable of being self-directed in college. The only way I was able to get my shit together was because so many expectations were riding on me and if I failed I would always be the shithead failure in my family who squandered his potential. Anxiety mixed with pride is a potent motivator.

Same thing with kids. If I hadn’t been doing college while I had two kids and my wife depending on my success I never would have finished.
