Riffing and chord progressions are basically mutually exclusive things. It takes a skilled musician to combine the two properly. Most famous metal musicians hit it off big when they were young. They got famous for their sound – not for being good musicians. Famous musicians seem to have an amalgamation of talents that rarely have anything to do with being technically good at their instrument. I get your point, but ultimately music is about evoking some kind of emotion in the listener. Dimebag Darrell probably had very little understanding of music theory, but his riffs and leads are still better than 99% of all the most skilled jazz and session guitarists out there.
