I have no musical background/inclination, but these episodes are still interesting to listen to.

This was a great episode Sven. I’ve played music for a long time but only recently bought some basic recording equipment. I found a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 for cheap on Reverb. I’d love to hear any deep dives you want to do on getting into home recording

I’m not interested in music theory, or really like this type of music, but Jesse is entertaining and so I listen anyways. Been listening to most shows since 2015 and I’m not gonna stop now.

Sven likes it when you tell him the intro riff to Prussian Blue is ripped off from Metallica’s Mission Impossible song “I Disappear”

I barely talk in the comments, and never on bang. But I listen cause the breadth and depth of the content. TDS is the best when it’s a mix of good info and funny commentary on shit I know almost nothing about. Also, metal head here. Jesse dunno if it’s up your alley, but band I like you should check out is Sylosis if you haven’t heard them. Their front man is insane at sweep picking and all their stuff is standard tuning which is just different for the genre. Anyways thanks for the content as always. From guy who… Read more »

As I mentioned towards the end, that particular guitar’s strings are too close to the neck and smacking against the pickups when I play hard. So, it’s not just you.

Well, now I know that Sven knows music like Mike knows Holocaust history.

Though now I’m thinking Sven’s brain may be bigger. I feel like a sat through a Master’s level class on Metal.

Dropped D has been a tuning long before heavy metal. Several years ago I learned several pieces by Agustin Barrios who played a century ago. A lot of those Spanish fingerstyle pieces are in dropped D. They would also tune the high E string down to D to a tuning called double dropped D.

I had never heard Metallica before I saw the “One” video in ’89. I saw it on MTV. I think it may have been Headbanger’s Ball originally, but I recall that the video made the regular rotation.

It was a great video. Soon I was listening to Kill ‘Em All, Ride the Lighning and Master of Puppets.

Have you ever mocked the notion of the official soundtrack of the holocaust being sappy violin music in your lyrics since I always love to call passing their shit test on the holocaust “smashing the violin”. When IQ spergs say that Jews being overrepresented in mastering the violin as proof of “Jewish genius”, I respond “well of course Jews would want to master the most emotionally manipulative musical instrument.”

That piece is kind of sappy. That being said, violin is at the core of much of classical music. From orchestra to chamber music. There are many great jewish violinists but there are also many non-jewish ones.

That Metallica subreddit reminds me of the same shit youtubers do with older stuff when they try to rehabilitate bad products as amazing pieces of art. I respect the novel takes some of them have but there are reasons these things were panned and/or never released internationally back in the day or just ten years ago.

WASP was a band that tried to have one foot in both worlds – bluesy hair metal and dark, heavier metal. They never fully committed to either one, even some of their heavier songs had typical dumb sex lyrics.

Can’t believe you didn’t bring up the mix on Death Magnetic. It’s become a poster child of the “loudness war”, and unless there’s been a new remaster the best sounding version of that album is still the one ripped from Guitar Hero.

I can sympathize as a listener to the first ep. I found the content enlightening, it’s stuck with me on a spirital and intellectual level, but dwelling in the minds of these people doesn’t tickle.
