I played Heroes of Might and Magic II after playing HOMM3, so I don’t have the same affection for II. I played an ungodly amount of HOMM3 at this point. The Russians even created an unofficial expansion for III that’s canon compliant, and one of the new town’s theme music was made by the original composer of III.
I agree on the general take on superchats, but with a slight caveat. I remember, a long time ago, when I used to listen to Devon Stack, the discussion spurred by SOME superchats would lead to the best content on that show. you can get civ 3 and 4 pretty cheap on steam if you want an experience closer to the originals, 6 is my personal favourite but it is fairly different mechanically from the older entries in the series

CIV4: Realism Invictus. My favorite overhaul mod for CIV4, superb autism, you can set it up so you have all the WW2 era faction leaders. It even has flags but the best civic will give you the nazbol flag. All the autistic changes are reflected in the civilopedia so you don’t need to download the guide pdf but you should because reading 100 page guides for a mod is fun!
