Ai can’t quite code yet. It’s really good for scripting but past 100 lines of code it gets overwhelmed and doesn’t work. I don’t know about the future but that’s how it is right now.
Ya I use it a bunch it’s awesome. I just had to well actually because it doesn’t just spit everything out you have to be there with it like a tool. Who knows about the future though.
It seems to me like the real issue is context window. Even if the models never get better, if you could put your entire codebase into the context of GPT-4o1, I suspect that the bottom 50% of programmers would be toast.
It’s not looking good for the profession. I wouldn’t get into it now.
On the plus side, I never have to mentor juniors anymore because they use gpt as a mentor. I only step in if they can’t figure things out, which still happens frequently.

The programming Mike did that is accessible and a good job is dead.
High IQ programming is still alive and it isn’t a particularly good job unless you are extremely smart or hard working.

Yeah they were already beginning to undercut wages in IT with H1B pajeets and overseas outsourcing pajeets in the 1990s. This when they still needed to encourage white kids to learn STEM which is now hopelessly flooded with foreign students. Even in the 1980s I was hearing complaints about the excessive numbers of East Asians in STEM in academia.

GPT-4o1 is shockingly good. It can even detect logical bugs a non-trivial amount of the time in a complex code base if it has the proper context.
