Correct. We could trade in something useful, but people usually make more of that, and making it against the law to do so would be counterproductive.

Historically other civilizations had other precious metals instead of gold. India preferred silver. Which ever metal is preferred is decided by the state. Sven is 100% right about gold being fiat
