I can’t stop myself from sperging slightly about the linguistic analysis…many of those examples are in fact in the active voice (e.g. “Palestinians recall,” “describe”, etc.) while still minimizing the impact of the crimes and displacing their agency. Passive voice, nominalization, euphemism are all very much on display as well here and overall Mike’s analysis is spot on but “voice” refers (as I’m sure Mike as the son of a philologist knows) to a specific grammatical property. The Orwell essay you mentioned has been incredibly highly recommended to me in the past. I own a copy and have read it but i’m far too ‘mid’ for it to have had an effect.
Try reading again with Mike’s analysis of the NYT in mind—it’s basically exposing a way of using language (at the sentence- and word-levels) to conceal and minimize terrible acts without outright lying.
