I’m sure it did exist back then but it was restricted to Boston. There was a broader New England Yankee accent (think Pepperidge Farm) which was different. I imagine HP Lovecraft’s Providence back then had its own distinct accent too. People who think everyone in New England speaks with a Boston accent don’t know New England.

The “Boston” accent people are familiar with was really an accent that came out of lower-class Dorchester and South Boston Irish neighbourhoods.

My guess is the Boston accent likely existed in some form by the beginning of the 20th century at least in those localities given that the communities the accent derives from were already forming by the end of the 19th century.
You used to be even able to find a North-End/Revere type accent in what was once an Italian-American stronghold which was distinct from the South Boston/Dorchester accent. Today North End is entirely brown and diversified 👍🏻

So I liked what amounted to the first book – makes sense. But after that I was thirsting for a narrative arc, some resolutions. Instead it was more characters, more subplots. Epic fantasy has trended this way – Erickson/Esslemont’s stories are all endless and meaningless like this. 40k now too.
It’s become pretty clear the what Martin really wants and wishes he had from the beginning was just an anthology setting where he can set all sorts of little short stories and novellas. Not a grand sprawling epic with a definitive climax and resolution to every character and plot thread.
Guillermo del toro’s (risible and shitty) adaptation of Pickman’s Model is worth watching solely for Crispin Glover’s accent, which is maybe supposed to be townie/Boston but sounds like some bizarre Victorian era New York street urchin
