“Qualia” is an overly complicated way to talk about a relatively simple concept, but Dennett’s arguments are self-defeating and no one outside New Atheist hangers-on (i.e., nobody working in epistemology or the philosophy of perception) has taken him seriously for at least a decade. “Phenomenal properties don’t exist” is a facially absurd claim that literally couldn’t even be made without refuting its premise.
The ‘ship of Theseus’ is the ‘idea’ for the construction of a specific vessel with a dedicated purpose in the material universe. It’s longevity is possible by adhering to the original objective of Theseus’ ship. At my children’s preschool there’s only one kid who isn’t white, but a pale mulatto. To my own hardened gaze, the boy doesn’t even look very different, but the kids (God bless them) instinctively shun him.
It’s instinctive. I grew up in a town that was probably 30% black and I distinctly remember even in kindergarten, despite having boomer shitlibs for parents, not wanting to be anywhere near the black kids. They just gave off a horrible vibe, as gay as that sounds.
I remember not really being able to verbalize it, but also knowing that I wasn’t “supposed” to feel this way and having some associated guilt.

A good way of identifying a chair is if a toddler can see it and recognize it as one. Theorycelling about the boundaries of the definition gets pointless in my opinion. By this standard, no, a rock or a tree stump is not a chair because nobody sees it as that, though you may be using it to sit on much like you would a chair.

Qualia isn’t just the appearance of something, but rather the EXPERIENCE of that thing as it manifests inside your inner movie. For example, there’s a difference between the mere registry of information when you look at a human face and the experience that you have when you witness that face.
