If that’s true, wouldn’t people develop allergies by drinking coffee? Why would being an entomologist, who looks at bugs or maybe dissects them, be more likely to develop a bug allergy than someone who directly ingests them?
I suspect, to incur an allergen sensitivity/sensitization (this is the term to research if you’re curious), you have to be exposed to large amounts of it regularly for your body to register an immune response. The greater the exposure, the more your body will mount a defense. In this model, I can see why “micro-dosing” allergens might be insufficient to develop a serious immune reaction. Entomologists get bitten by these things a lot, and that will screw with you. I worked with one who wore a full beekeeper suit and long sleeves and gloves in the field in summer, because he’d developed allergies to certain species to the point where biting flies that would give you or me a little itchy bump would cause some kind of crazy reaction that was visible on his skin down the line of his veins towards his heart. Same as with beekeepers developing bee allergies.
