Bringing up Bobby Sands is a great point. Him and the rest starving to death one after another was a huge deal given how modern of a thing it was. It’s still mind blowing that it was the fuckin 80s. That recently, Britain was allowing men to die that slowly one after another in prison with no trial. Difference is that Bobby Sands and the other 9 hunger strikers didn’t just decide to commit suicide out of the blue.
Their hunger strike was a last resort and a culmination of a long build up of events.

Remarkably Bobby Sands was elected to the British House of Commons, winning the seat of Fermanagh and South Tyrone on April 10 1981 in a by-election race. Running as an ‘Anti H-Block’ (H-Block being the nickname for Maze Prison where he was imprisoned) candidate, he received 30,000 votes, beating an Ulster Unionist candidate. He would die less than a month later on the 5th of May.
