I think there is a decent argument that post civil war America is bad, the Civil War was far more brutal than it should have been and social cohesion in the country had to be worn down significantly to do it. One can look to what happened in Canada, or other european colonies with regards to indians to see that the issues caused by “manifest destiny” and empire concepts are not unique to america.
