There is no reason they could not just seal off entrances and pump in a gas that is heavier than air, and thus will sink into the tunnels. Chlorine is one example, its 2.5x approximately heavier than air. It will react with any moisture on the tunnel walls to form hydrochloric acid, while also displacing air. That’s correct. I am on vacation in Idaho and took awhile to listen to this podcast. I agree with the Death Panel that the tunnel story is dumb propaganda, but there is no technical reason why you could not use chemical agents as area denial in tunnels, let alone kill megatons of people that way.
