Then I found out that a lot of weird import laws make it tough to get the high grade stuff outside of the country.
I went to a Sake tasting at a Japanese embassy and I was blown away by how good it was. Apparently the level to which the rice is milled beforehand has a big impact on the quality of the Sake.

Mike and Sven definitely haven’t had fine sake or Japanese whiskey. It is very good as its own thing, and given how they talk about peaty stuff like ardbeg islay, I don’t think that it’s very fair to talk down on the stuff Japan puts out. Myself, I’ve never been a fan of sake, but there are some decent Jap whiskeys out there.
In Minneapolis there’s an American (as in Japanese have no involvement) ramen bar called Moto-i that brews its own sake. It’s considered pretty good by even by Japanese standards.
I haven’t been since I moved six years ago, but at the time they were one of only two licensed sake breweries in Amurrica.
