Illumination is known in the animation industry for outsourcing their animation and extensive cost cutting measures compared to Pixar, Dreamworks, and Disney. Notice how simplistically lazy many of their character designs are compared to the characters you would see in your average Disney or Dreamworks film. I’ve never seen an Art of book from a film made by Illumination. Many people have speculated they spend the lion’s share of their budgets on marketing which why online clips from their movies become shareable catnip for young children and Facebook boomers but not Disney adults or older Zoomers.
I know from our perspective those look “lazy” and for me personally I don’t care for them, but there is a lot time and detail a.k.a budget spent in regards to the physics whether it’s elements, clothing, or hair for characters in Disney/ Pixar films. I know it’s an awful and extremely subversive film but I can tell from a technical stand point a lot more time was spent on the anthropomorphic animal designs in Zootopia then Illumination did with the anthropomorphic animals in their film, Sing.
