I have a gas boiler hot water system and heat pump split system that was added when I bought the house so my wife can have AC. In my experience the heatpumps work great for heat as long as the outside temp is above freezing. Once it gets below the gas boiler slowly catches the heat pump in terms of cost and once it hits 0 outside forget about it the heat pumps work for shit. Heatpumps are actually subsidized by the government in Finland. When you drill deep into the ground the soil/rock actually stays above freezing, even if not warm, so basically the liquid pockets a couple of degrees of difference which gets extracted by the pump. /Autism

So a heatpump is going to be more efficient at maintaining low level heat. For example it is 55 degrees outside and you have your thermostat set to 67. Once you get outside of that range heatpumps become incredibly inefficient. That’s why you see a lot of combo natural gas furnace and a/c heat pumps.
Also I base all this on nothing but personal experience.
ASHPs are designed to supplement heat during spring and autumn. Using a heat pump as a sole means to heating your home during cold winters will drastically reduce the lifespan of the unit. I’d refrain from using it outside of temperate climate zones.
It’s also why geothermal heat pumps are used, where the heat is pulled from deep underground. It’s very expensive to get it set up, but they can work in cold climates.
