It tastes like eating peat moss. I was a landscaper for years as a teen and that stink of peat left a deep impression in me psychologically. The first time I drank a peaty whiskey which I was told was “really good expensive complex stuff” I almost puked. Just awful. Not for me. Tastes like dirt mixed with cigar ashes.

Peaty Whisky is right up my alley though. Always conjures up feelings of a comfy fireplace, bookshelves and a bear skin spread on the floor. It works for me.

Haggis is yummy it’s not unlike corn beef hash with a little spice. A good peaty Scotch has a bit of a soapy taste to it (kinda like what cilantro has in the background even if you aren’t genetically predisposed to taste cilantro as soapy). Yes you can learn to enjoy it but it is an acquired taste (and well worth acquiring). Currently working my way through a bottle of Highland Park myself. It’s definitely acquired. Depending on the spent barrel, there is usually red or dark fruit notes hiding behind the peat, which gives off bacon, smoked ham, sometimes a smoked cheese.
The only scotch worth drinking is Islay scotch. All the rest is uninteresting and weak on the palate. You’re better off with a good barrel proof bourbon or an older aged Irish.
