So you must have a wood stove with a pipe venting it out the side of your house? If it’s not heating up nicely there’s something wrong with your dampering system or you have a very leaky house. I have lots of experience 3 years heating with coal in 10 years heating with wood although my furnace is only 8 years old. I’ve had professional installations and inspections and I’ve also installed my own pipe properly and clean it every year with help. As a child, I experienced my older brother’s experiment with my Dad’s fireplace. My brother decided to see how hot he could get the fire in the dead of winter. Pretty soon the house was creeping towards 100 degrees and everyone was sweating. My Dad told my brother to stop putting more wood on the fire and by that time everyone was in summer clothes and suffering. That fireplace in my Dad’s 1,200 square foot house was awesome!

As long as you can fit a flexible stainless steel pipe up your chimney there is no reason you can’t install an insert into your existing fireplace opening. I did it a long time ago and it only cost the price of the stove and pipe and fittings plus high heat caulking. Installed it in a day by myself
