Pipes and cigars where you don’t inhale are much safer (not risk free, but much less risky than cigarettes) but you want to break your nicotine addiction first.
I’ve never been a cigarette smoker but took up cigars a few years ago and have never experienced nicotine addiction symptoms. I smoke cigars outdoors and therefore go for months in winter without smoking a cigar and never feel any cravings for nicotine.
If cigars don’t appeal try cigarillos for a short smoke similar to cigarettes but you don’t inhale.
NIcotine isnt the issue, its all of the other contaminents that come along with regular cigs. Vaping is the best of both words (20mg/mL of nicotine is an equal 1 to 1 cig replacement).
I was referring in particular to cravings and addiction not the other health issues; inhalation of cigarette smoke gives a much quicker nicotine absorption into the bloodstream which causes the addiction. Pipes and cigars you don’t inhale so any bloodstream absorption is in the mouth and throat which is slower/lesser than the lungs, so casual use of pipes and cigars has lower nicotine levels and much less chance of addiction.
Nicotine addiction is like caffeine addiction in that it is a minor issue in itself, but cigarette smoking makes nicotine addiction inevitable which in turn causes one to smoke large amounts of contaminated cigarettes which leads to lung diseases. So the two issues are related.

Granted I am not usually a daily cigar smoker but I have gotten that stuff in my lungs by accident and it was not pleasant. My grandfather was a daily cigar smoker and he lived until his late 80s and I’m pretty sure he didn’t inhale. He would literally smoke a cigar in the bathtub though so I suspect he did have a nicotine addiction.
