Regarding the discussion of Memphis this week, starting early this century and for over 10 years I traveled to Memphis on a regular basis, scores of trips. One of the first things my local “hosts” (instinctively racist Boomers) told me was that Memphis-proper was checkerboard of safe(ish) neighborhoods and feral jungles, and that you could go from America to a hellscape in one block. There was a barbeque place we would go to for lunch sometimes. It had a actual guard tower in its small parking lot that was manned at night. We never went there for supper…
Recently on a visit to Las Vegas, I went to a highly recommended ‘authentic’ Mexican restaurant which was so authentic, there was an armed security guard at the front door. This security guard was open-carrying a big revolver and was in blue jeans and a flannel shirt. I don’t think he spoke ingles either.
