The socialized healthcare up here in Canada was pretty good. If you had a problem you’d get booked in and it would be taken care of quickly and cost you nothing. I don’t know about the rest of Canada but in Alberta we’re dealing with rural hospitals shutting down too. It puts all the pressure on the hospitals in the cities and people have to drive hours for treatment when there’s an empty hospital close to them. My friends wife had to stay in the city 2.5 hours away from home the last 2 months of her pregnancy cause she was so high risk. It gets costly for rural white families. Any Kurosawa film, really. I mentioned Yojimbo and Sanjuro because Sergio Leone ripped them off, for his Spaghetti Westerns; or be generous and call it an homage.
High and Low, Dreams, and Ikiru are 3 of his films that are contemporary. They’re still excellent.
Ran, Throne of Blood, The Hidden Fortress, and The Seven Samurai are all magnificent historical dramas, but High and Low is my favorite. You can see the genesis of the modern detective film in nearly every scene. It reminds me of Fritz Lang’s “M” in style and feel, though not in content.
