scp is always going to be really slow because it uses the SSH protocol, which is designed for remote sessions and not large transfers. If you run an rsync server on the receiving machine and then use the rsync command from the sending machine, it’ll be way faster. That’s the standard solution in the Unix world.
I was able to tolerate mikes echo because I’m a CB radio enthusiast.

It takes little or no configuration, so it’s quick to set up.
And it uses SSH authentication.
The Mike Robot only lasts 5 minutes or so
