LNG (versus CNG) is inefficient comparatively for a few reasons. The primary one is turning it from a gas to a liquid is very energy intensive. You have to have what they call compressor trains, and lots of refrigeration on top of that. You need these trains on both ends, to compress the CNG to LNG and then decompress the LNG to CNG. Natural gas does not just flow because of gravity. Fluid and gas flow is subject to friction, just like anything else moving outside of a vacuum. In so many words you lose energy as you move through the pipe.
Gas Pipelines have compressor stations along the length of them. These compressor stations siphon off a small amount of the gas to run engines that compress the gas to move it further along the line.
