Consciously I think most people are clueless about the censorship but subconsciously people feel something is amiss.
When I was a wee lad in the 1970s it was not uncommon to hear someone say “it’s a free country” in conversation referring to the basic assumption that Americans were free to speak and act as they wished.
I haven’t heard that phrase come up in conversation or in the mass media for I dunno, the last 20-30 years at least. People know.
