Sven it’s more fully explained in The Silmarillion. They are sailing west to Valinor, which since the end of the Second Age isn’t part of Middle Earth so it is sort of like an alternate plane of reality. So it’s both sailing west to another continent but also leaving Middle Earth (ordinary reality). It is an idea Tolkien derived from myths; see Fortunate Isles, Isles of the Blessed, Hy-Brasil, Avalon, etc.

Elysium is one of my all time favorite movies after I watched it recently. It’s extremely based and I’m not sure if Neil blomkamf did it on purpose. Its set in LA 100 years in the future and shows such an incredibly realistic portrayal of what L.A. will actually look like as a collapsed society overrun with beaners. It also features a fascist villain that has a higher ideological vision and wants to seize control of the stagnating space colony and bring it to a higher level of glory.
