Almost every street drug does have fentanyl in it now. I treated an overdose patient who thought the pills he had taken were Vicodin when in reality they were morphine pills laced with fentanyl. He started having trouble breathing so we were dispatched out to find him unconscious and not breathing on the garage floor with his cell phone laying next to him the 911 dispatcher still on the phone trying to get information from him. It took one dose of intranasal naloxone and two doses of naloxone administered via IV to get him to start breathing again.

Probably will. What most don’t understand about opioids is that they cause respiratory depression which slows/stops breathing and the brain begins to die within 3 to 4 minutes of not having oxygen. The heart can still beat during this time period even though it is in serious trouble. Once the brain begins to die then the cardiovascular system collapses and the person goes into cardiac arrest. At this stage I’ve only treated three patients who survived resuscitation however all three had some form of neurological problems afterwards.
