As for the Russian mums picking up captured Russian troops, my understanding is that’s actually true. Both Russia and the Ukraine have a policy of just letting troops who surrender immediately without fighting go, after handing over their weapons ofcourse. Both armies heavily rely on conscripts who don’t actually want to be there, so both sides see no harm in doing this. I think the Ukrainians have a caveat to this policy where a family member from Russia must pick the soldier up in person and promise to take them back to their home in Russia. The Russian forces have not used any conscripts in combat roles in this campaign, this has been stated multiple times.
