Hans-Joachim Marseille and Emil Lang of the Luftwaffe scored 17 and 18 in a single day, respectively.
Marseille’s achievement is regarded as even more outstanding, since he flew against the British, whose planes, pilots and tactics were considered to be superior to the Soviets.
He died not long after his best day in a flight accident without enemy involvement and many believe he was the most skilled fighter pilot ever.
