I honestly thought it was a bit much when the baron started hovering and Oscar Isaac looked directly at the camera and said “They can fly now?!”

There is a Holy Roman Empire thing with the empire in Dune. Collection of noble houses is landsraad and they are as powerful as the emperor. There is definitely a mesh of themes, but it’s more like HRE and Persia than the ottoman empire.

the movie wasn’t bad by any means but he casting hurt it. the sets are too clean and sparse. the atredies homeworld looked so bare. you would never think they were one of the most powerful houses in the galaxy looking at the few things shown. also the lack of background action was really standout. there should be solders moving all over the place but its all just main characters. makes the world feel small

Achshullly liet Keynes would look like she was in her 40s but actually be older in the books the emperor is 70 but looks 30 cause the spice extends life
But in fairness the spice would not have turned him into a nigger

IIRC in the book the shield wall is breached by House Atreides atomic weapons, not by setting off a personal shield with a laser.

Haven’t seen the new Dune movie and don’t plan to, but you keep talking about Raban but don’t mention Feyd? Feyd was by far the more important and significant nephew of the Baron Harkonnen in the book. Is he not in the movie? Going to show up in part 2?
The movie only covers 1st third of the book. It ends at the point where Paul and Jessica have been accepted into the Fremen and are heading to Sietch Tabr.

Jessica is of Harkonnen blood, it isn’t just a prequel thing. Remember Alia Atreides in the second book has all the memories of her ancestors and she gets taken over or “possessed” by the personality of the Baron Harkonnen.

Scottish? Hmmm…IIRC a lot of Duke Atreides’ people are supposed to be quasi-Slavic; Gurney Halleck plays a baliset, which sounds like it is derived from the balalaika. The most common Imperial language is Galach which is supposed to be a kind of English-Slavic mashup. No mention of Scottish influences or bagpipes in Dune IIRC.

The TRS network is truly fare and balanced when it comes to opinions on Dune.

It might work better as a show, I recently finished watching Legend of The Galactic Heroes (original) and in this they do the dueling geniuses thing very well. That would probably be the best way to adapt Dune, as a show.

Unironically listening to extended versions of the Sardaukar chant scene on repeat. Uniquely powerful energy.
I love Villeneuve’s work but your take about it being his golden years before he becomes too powerful is probably true. Man’s capable of good work despite cultural trends.
