As for Columbus, I think you’re overlooking 2 important aspects of his “cockamamie scheme”:
1. he planned to use FOREIGN NATIONS’ armies to do the fighting FOR him
2. his focus was holding wealth and taking Jerusalem (even though the crusades ended 200 years earlier)
I smell a rat.
But it’s not “X thing I don’t like”, it’s using unearned wealth to pay foreign militaries to wage war in the Middle East.
He also left Spain in 1492. There was this other thing that happened in Spain in 1492…

To be fair here, “Kill with a borrowed knife” is basically Statecraft 101 when it comes to achieving strategic goals.
