Yes, they were once wary of military and “conservative” governmental entities. At same time films of that era show a reverential and idealized concept of the press. You see this in Condor at the end when he goes into NYT building. You see it in All the President’s Men. So there was the conceit that, yes, there’s rampant corruption and abuse of power BUT thankfully we have the “free press” working tirelessly to get to the truth. Dogged reporters like Woodward and Bernstein and whistleblowers like Daniel Ellsberg.
The absurd ending where they fax something to the Jew York Times to expose the CIA certainly did not age well. LOL
