GFCIs trip when there is a fluctuation between the current inflow and outflow at a receptacle, indicating a discharge of current, and they do it fast enough to prevent electrocution if say an appliance shorts to a wet floor. They are required anywhere there is water for that reason (kitchen bath outside etc). Not required other places but they certainly don’t hurt.
