Without road salt the roads and highways would be unusable after every snowstorm. If you live up north you get used not only to the snowplows on the roads but also the trucks spreading salt and gravel on the roads.
And people also put out salt on their doorsteps, sidewalks, driveways etc. to melt or prevent ice. Nothing worse than slipping and falling due to black ice.

I guess Texas being on it’s own isolated grid means power from other states couldn’t get there even if plants in those other places could hypothetically send Texas some of their energy.
Think there would be precautionary emergency buses (switches) in order to tie isolated systems in case of contingencies. Understand the argument for isolated power systems, but no problem is insurmountable. There are work arounds if White people put their mind to it.

One of the reasons Texas is having rolling blackouts is because nuclear and natural gas power plants are down. The reason some of those plants are down is because the cold is freezing things like coolant pipes and gauges to monitor the plants (which means the operator shut the plants down). Natural gas and nuclear stations in places like Ohio or Minnesota are winterized so the cold doesn’t stop them from operating. True. Any power generation, storage, and transmission system will have issues with frigid temperatures unless they’re designed to withstand them. The weatherization standards are largely based around how long outside temps can be below 32F before things stop working. Texas can get freezing temps, but it usually isn’t as sustained as this (which is why you started seeing power issues on day 2-3 of freezing temps). Wind turbines are especially prone to icing. Wouldn’t be surprised. In Western WA and much of California, they moved transmission lines underground for wind/earthquake concerns. Texas, like most of the midwest, probably hasn’t done this.
I wish they would move them underground in the Northeast which is like a forest. I lost power for 7 and a half days over tge summer because of high winds.

The only thing those windmills do is give MidAmerican Energy tax breaks and fuck over the farmers who are forced to give up land for those things. What’s your source on the 7%? I just checked the wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wind_power_in_Iowa). It’s saying it was 41% in 2019 and 56% in 2020. That’s a percentage of total electricity generation by wind in Iowa.

I think the fasteners in my Jeep engine are SAE, because it’s an old AMC engine design, but everything else on the car is metric and torx.
