MP40 was the standard smg for Germany, untill right before the end of the war. It was replaced with the STG44 (the world’s first assault rifle, the inspiration for the AK)
The STG44 cannot be considered a replacement for the MP40. It would have replaced the K98 rifle that a soldier carried. As you say, it was the first of its kind.
Wasn’t necessarily a replacement for the K98 rifle per se either, but in WWII they found that most engagements started occurring at 2-250 yards meters which a full powered rifle cartridge was a bit overkill, and the mp40 was more for close quarter engagements or urban fighting. The STG44 was a good in between of both the K98 and the MP40 but yes it was intended to be the direct replacement standard infantry mag fed semi and full auto rifle.

If I’m not mistaken it was the SG44, FG42 and most commonly the K98 that were used by the Germans. The Kar 98 especially (as it was a battle rifle akin to the M1 Garand) looks drastically dissimilar to the Thompson. The closest candidate IMO would be the SG44 but the banana shaped magazine is very different compared to the stick mags (or drums) of the Thompson and was of steel construction while the Thompson was constructed of wood and steel

Yeah Kar 98K Rifle an MP 40 were standard stuff for the german army and SS. TommyGun is like a 1920s weapon and the Thompson submachine gun used by the US Marines was actually a stripped down and modified TommyGun. Using a short bar mag instead of a drum mag the TommyGun used. I believe the US was going to make the “Grease Gun” standard issue also but production never started up in time as they had went with the Thompson in the end. They didn’t go with the Thompson in the end. They went with it in the beginning. It took a couple of years for design and production for the Grease Gun. But once they got it wound up it completely replaced the Thompson. Also re: M-1 Garand. It may have been heavy I don’t think it was any harder to produce than, say, the British Enfield or the German Mauser and while it may have been more expensive the fact that it was semi-automatic more than made up for that.
But the Grease Gun came very late in the war. If I’m not mistaken, it was largely issued to tank crews.
It came in 1943. The reason was because of the expense and difficulty of producing the Thompson as well as the Thompson’s problems in the field. I’m not aware of it being largely issued to tank crews. From what I understand it was issued to everybody as a universal replacement for the Thompson.
