FTN 368: Cohen’s Cattle Car Express

December 24, 2020 by Jazzhands McFeels

Jazznds and James revisit the console question and briefly reeeact to late-breaking news and we predicted thiths before settling into some comfy Christmas content, including dueling Christmas dinner traditions, fond mall memories, the Sears Wishbook, and the ancient particularism of Lionel Trains, culminating in a white-pilling nnndeep-nnndive into the Germanic history of Christmas trees, J-Woke contemporaries who contributed to their evolution, and how our favorite uncle celebrated the holiday. If Thursday's Christmas Eve, it’s FTN!

Thing about PC vs Consoles that always worries me that I don’t see brought up enough is something that doesn’t get brought up enough due to the hardware Just to get this out of the way, PC is going always going to be the stronger option. You can buy your own parts, and you can play more on a PC than a console that will eventually fall victim to the life cycle of consoles. I’m not denying the superiority in hardware or performance. The thing that worries me more and especially given our experience, we understand this better than any… Read more »

The Burning of the Greens is an old European tradition, where trees, wreathes, and garlands are burned early in the new year (Jan. 5-6). Also, it stands to reason that the largest minority by far in Livonia would have been Germans.

I wish this comment feature could notify us somehow when a comment is replied to. My high time preference and low agency outpaces my autistic comment sperg-ery. (No offense Spam Houston). My PC building comment from the last FTN started a good conversation but I didn’t know it. Is there a way to set comment reply notifications?

Merry Christmas goys. Some years ago when I used to go out to the woods for my Christmas Tree, I brought home a beautiful blue spruce. It was very cold so I set it up in the living room with plans to decorate it the next day. Came home from work and there had to be at least a hundred spiders in my living room. I was amused but my girl friend was no fan of spiders so I spent the better part of the night catching them. They came out of the tree for a few more days until… Read more »

Good story. I had a bug story this season… A week ago, upon returning home late from work, I turned on the lights only to see a colony of ants carrying eggs and building a nest underneath my Christmas tree stand. Needless to say it took several days to contain, eradicate and clean up the mess. I lifted a fully decorated 7′ tree from the tree stand and into an old fashioned, raised metal stand which was quite the scene, orange oil, poison granules, broken tip which holds my lighted Moravian star, shattered ornaments strewn about the living room. My… Read more »

Serfs were prohibited from cutting trees because there was no public land. Land was their lord’s. Also, peasants were forbidden to hunt because the resource was that of the lord’s. This was reserved for the gentry. Asserting the lord’s right to his natural resources is where “game warden” originates. That’s how I understand it. ______ Christmas is observed four days after the Winter Solstice using the Gregorian Calendar. Christmas is observed eighteen days after the Winter Solstice using the Julian Calendar. Gregorian calendar was adapted by the West in the late fifteen hundreds. Up until the the fifteen hundreds, the… Read more »

Here’s my go-to recipe for smoked mac & cheese. It’s a great template for experimenting; for Christmas, for example, I’m going to make a normal batch, one with added green chiles & sausage, and another with bacon & a brown sugar breadcrumb topping. 1 pound elbow macaroni noodles 1/2 cup butter 4 Tablespoons flour 1 Tablespoon mustard powder 2 cups half and half 4 oz cream cheese 3 cups mixed mild cheese (provolone, cheddar, mozzarella, etc) 1.5 cups strong cheese (gouda, muenster, etc.) Cook macaroni per package instructions in lightly salted water (I use sea salt.) Preheat your smoker to… Read more »

Calibrating a controller for steam games can be massively frustrating. I started using steam a couple months ago to play ps3 era games that aren’t really available for console and man was it a pain in the ass. Also their is some gay shit with certain publishers requiring you to use their service in conjunction with steam. I just don’t have these performance standards that can only be met with pc. I can’t really tell the difference anyway. I just don’t have an eye for it

This is definitely going to be made in the near future. I’ve been looking up traditional European dishes and making them a couple times a month on my day off to give the kids a wider palate and surprisingly a lot of it has taken with all but the pickiest one.

My biggest hit so far has been Romanian Ciorba (sour pork soup). This is an excellent recipe I usually make it without the rice.

German, and East/Central European food is the best. I love fermented foods. Raw kraut is great for probiotics if you have digestive issues.

My Czech step grandma made the best cabbage rolls every Christmas. I wish I had the recipe. Nothing I’ve found tastes like hers.
