Borzoi spergs out with DK on the topic of quantum mechanics and its history, scientific appropriation by the draq queen community, and a brief review of the Sokal Affair and the credibility crisis.

@borzoi have you ever done a nnndeep dive on Simulation and Simulacrum? If so, where can one find it?
All I got from this was “DADA!”
That was a really great episode guys. I didn’t know DK had a physics background. It would be an interesting topic for another episode to elaborate more on the philosophy of math. Because there is a similar division between the Platonic view of math and the results of non-Euclidean geometry and even different arithmetics. So that same rift even exists in the “ultra pure ” world of mathematics.
I think what DK is getting at is that Math is our gateway to the building blocks of the building blocks of the Universe and Physics is the way of understanding how those building blocks create items of a higher order and how those items interact with each other and how those items can be manipulated and what the results of that manipulation is. Don’t want to put words in anyones mouth, just my thoughts
This has me wondering where the limit between science and philosophy are…
Math is a human invention, a useful tool and surprisingly robust and adaptive system.
Relation you describe is backwards and wrong.
Math is built from physics, which is built from physical world. Math is just a visualization tool, like a graph or an illustration.
I think you’re wrong because you can’t have physics or chemistry without math, how would you know that particle A does X to particle B? How would you know to distill X amount of dirty sulfuric acid from drain cleaner and you’ll get Y amount at ~98% purity, or whatever the percentage is when you start distilling equal amounts water and acid. There’s Math and there’s math, the former being how the universe was created, a sacred force, and the latter being our attempt to harness the former for Our purposes

This is about Quantum Physics! Who the fuck wants to listen to that?! I’m out. I don’t even wanna know what it is. I saw the Trudeau explain it once. I’ll try to repeat what I heard. Let’s see how close I get. Quantum Physics is like computers communicate in zeros and ones. And there are wires communicating all that shit around. And somewhere along the path something happens, and there’s sort of a black hole of numbers. And scientists have no evidence that this black hole exists. But Matt Damon tier geniuses (“I could always just play” and “how… Read more »
Let’s get pedantic. >Quantum physics is like Computers communicating in zeros and ones – That’s true. QP concerns itself with interaction of discreet quantities of matter, or quantums. Quantum Mechanics describe how those interactions happen. >And there are wires communicating all that shit around. Are you implying spooky action at a distance? That’s debatable. I personally believe that speed of Light is not the universal speed limit. Once you get rid of that assumption, alot of things start making sense. >And somewhere along the path something happens, and there’s sort of a black hole of numbers. No, we know exactly… Read more »
Nerd!
Have you heard of De Broglie-Bohm Theory? I think it might be a better model of quantum phenomena than the Everettian interpretation. It has much more concreteness than the Copenhagen interpretation as well, so I think Borzoi might be interested in it. Either way, I’m interested in what you think about it.
The explanation of the double slit experiment is pretty weak
The series on Nagarjuna’s “Root Verses of the Middle Way” crosses into a lot of quantum physics territory.
this podcast makes me think about big rocks
This discussion was astounding. Could DK have a discussion with Johny Monoxide? I enjoy conspiracy theories and Johny is a truly fantastic guy but sometimes… I don’t know… are more conspiracy theories helpful at this point of the game?
Post Modernists are mostly full of shit but they are vilified since they pointed out the Liberal conceptions of reality are more of shit then anything else. As someone who would also have legitimate interest in academia in decades past the transformation of it even in these past few years to absolute religious fervor and asinine beliefs is a sight to behold.
Great show. Went well with mowing the lawn. Thanks nnguys for helping remember all the Chemistry/Physics I had almost forgotten.
Has someone told the 41%ers that the double slit experiment doesn’t refer to their wrists?.
The hardest problem of Jewish lies is that they’re wrapped in some truths. The best example of this is physics.
I hope TRS lasts so long Siege Baby can say hello to us one day
Great show. Great background baby appearance.
hail!
I appreciate the way Siege Baby was included, but at times edited. It was a good way to keep the flow going while also acknowledging the realities of family life. DK has a great mind and also seems like a great dad.
Kid clearly didn’t know the shot.
Heisenberg “Physics and Philosophy” and “Physics and Beyond”
Great show. I’m rereading Debord and reading Sorel to prepare for the next symposium
Goddamn please don’t play tranny clips ever again. Holy shit.
Another graphic novel thats a good read if interested, called simply Thd Manhattan Projects. Its fantastic, recommended if you like graphic novels
My fav autistic friend simulator!!
The value of precision you are requesting exceeds capabilities. Increase tolerance to continue.
Right out of the gate I just want to clarify to people – Mathematics is a system of truth proofing. It’s not a science. If you agree to a statement that 2+2=4 eventually you can arrive to Maxwells equations. Theories can be mathematically true and physically false, because mathematics, as said only concerns with itself.
Mathematics can be considered modern art, by that regard
Physics on the other hand is concerned with forecasting of physical event – i.e. prediction. Of planets, thermal mass, pendulums, wheels and guilllotines etc. Turns out when we started observing at the limit of possible measurement, particles stopped moving in predictable, deterministic ways – i.e. a straight line. The key, imo, to quantum mechanics and double slit experiment, is the uncertainty principle. In double slit experiment, interference pattern collapses if you put a detector on 1 of the slits, or you move slits further apart. That means you remove, or reduce the uncertainty. If there’s no uncertainty, there’s no quantum… Read more »
As far as trannys are concerned, they are not quantum mechanics phenomena. Because we can measure them.
Can you have babies – then you are a woman
Can you inseminate women – then you are a man
Otherwise you’re just a sexless weirdo. Sorry. There’s 2 genders and 4 relations between them.
> Because even if there are those universes, that’s fundamentally immeasurable, therefore it’ doesn’t exist. forgive me for my autism and correct me if i’m wrong, but the inability to measure something doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. look at sqrt(-1). i guess you can measure it on a complex plane but that would be fake and contrived. people make fun of me because i always use sqrt(-1) as an example of something that exists but isn’t real (usually when arguing for the existence of God lol). i guess most (all?) math constants (pi, e, phi, etc) would work because they’re… Read more »
shit i just learned that i isn’t a transcendental number. clearly an error on my part, but the the thesis still stands, for now lol.
Yes, this is exactly why Pythagorean theorem was a basis of a mystical worship cult. It messes with peoples brain, when they can’t imagine something. I will refer back to my first post – math is a system of truth proofing. It’s not actually connected to physical reality – it’s metaphysical. -1 of atoms does not exist. So anything beyond positive integers is not real (I’m excluding what mathematicians call real numbers). So why is it useful? Because symbols in math like – + * / sqrt, etc. describe action and/or relation between entities. So the action between atoms is… Read more »
If that is true, how come we can use them to predict the behaviour of the physical world? Logos?
Yes
The easy response to this dragthings dumb ramblings is: YOU ARE NOT A SUBATOMIC PARTICLE. Case closed.
Not a fan of the “consciousness causes collapse” theory, there doesn’t seem to be any reason to believe consciousness has anything to do with quantum weirdness, it kinda makes sense in an intuitive way (consciousness neatly interpreting the noise of information in the universe), but as with anything in QM, intuition is a poor guide to insight.
I always thought of it as: if there is no observation, no position is required. I dont see it as a collapse but like someone turning on the light in a dark room with a man running around. He could be anywhere but you dont know until you turn on the light.
@gravitywaves the “missing link” (so to speak) here is panpsychism or ontological idealism, which I understand is difficult for most Westerners these days to accept, but is foundational to the Buddhist view that I subscribe to. This is actually not strictly required for the following explanation, but it does provide the most comprehensive framework. Anyway, the basic idea is that, because all phenomena are in principle knowable by someone–if some entity, in principle, could never be known by anyone, then there is no meaningful sense in which that entity could be said to “exist”–then, at the highest level of… Read more »
That’s a weird way of saying information transmission. To put it back to the old ‘did a tree fell in the woods question’. You don’t know about a tree falling, but then when hiking you find a tree that fell. So did a conscious tree communicated with conscious earth and decided to collide and make it look like it happened 2 days ago? Or did it simply happen and you just didn’t know about it. Epistemologically there is no difference between the tree not existing and you not knowing about it. And when we don’t know, the universe behaves probabilistically.… Read more »
this is unironically solved by the existance of a higher consciousness, and only by it. Due to the existance of qualia that we can not have, but other Observers can – e.g human beings can perceive the light touching our retinas as “colour”, dogs can not, whilst dogs can perceive fragrances that we are unable to from their nose sensors. Were we to suddenly implant sensors in our retina that allowed us to “see” infrared in addition to visible light, we can not conceive of the brain being able to process that infrared into a “new colour” when it creates… Read more »
The many worlds theory serves the purpose of making the equations work but that does not mean the many worlds are proven to exist. Many worlds is for now, a conceptual tool.
To clarify a point that I explained somewhat clumsily: electrons have an “intrinsic spin” of 1/2 which cannot change and partially defines them as electrons, but this “intrinsic spin” can be expressed as two different types of “directional spin,” “up” (+1/2) and “down” (-1/2)
Just starting listening to the Right Wing Dharma Squad series on Nagarjuna’s “Root Verses of the Middle Way” today, and it sounds like this will be a good companion piece. I haven’t thought this much about quantum physics in a coon’s age.
To also clarify, spin is a magnetic moment – strength of magnetic field (1/2) and direction (+/- )
It used to confuse me until I learned that.
