“Sonderkommando” seems like its analogous to the term “Trustee” or “Tier rep” in modern American prisons. Trustees are basically inmates that are liaisons to the corrections officers, they represent the inmates regarding various day-to-day operations like who will be assigned to what work detail, how certain amenities will be fairly divided between races, they are in charge of distributing weekly canteen/commissary orders, serving food on the tier during lockdowns etc. They are inmates who have significant time in, are respected by the general population and are not trouble-makers. There will be at least 1 per race.
Back when I was working the block, we had guys in the ILC that was essentially a prisoners Union. They would have the ability to set certain policies and bring them forth to the administration for consideration. More or less the same thing but it might differ between departments States and federal corrections.
