The thing with diesel is it’s not that great of a fuel, liquid natural gas is a much better fuel because it’s more energy dense, anywhere from 8% to ~40% depending on the quality of the diesel, and it weighs less gallon to gallon as compared to diesel, 3.49 pounds per gallon as compared to 7.09 pounds per gallon, plus natural gas is cleaner burning. For example by switching from one to the other you could drop the tare weight of a truck and trailer combination vehicle from ~34,000 pounds to ~30,000 pounds and increase the range of the vehicle… Read more »
Definitely- lots of new buses and heavy machines are switching to LNG engines. That said, 90%+ of the U.S. heavy truck fleet is still dependent on diesel.
Tbh if the government were truly concerned with climate change they’d subsidize the switch to LNG in heavy equipment and commercial vehicles, CNG in passenger cars and light duty trucks, along with building new infrastructure to support this change with the intention that within 25 to 30 years every car on the road would use these fuels, along with switching the power generation grid over to nuclear in the form of molten sodium fast reactors because of the ability to reuse what would otherwise be spent fuel rods, hydroelectric, and geothermal.
I take it you’ve never driven a vehicle fueled with LNG? I have. The acceleration is lousy and the vehicle I drove had tanks mounted on the top of the vehicle making the ride unstable. I would much prefer driving a diesel powered truck, bus, whatever. Also, just as an aside, LNG fueling stations are expensive to build.
I haven’t, I’ve only worked for two companies in the industry as of this post and they’ve all been diesel powered. The acceleration question can be fixed with the proper gearing in the transmission and the axles. LNG stations being expensive isn’t a problem because we would make money printer go brrrrrrr

I have no way of proving my knowledge of this without doxxing myself, but right now the refinery side of the oil industry is doing fine with producing much less gasoline and jet fuel while producing about 80% of the diesel they normally do. “gasoline”, “diesel” and “jet fuel” are to a limited extent social constructs and the exact mix of chemicals in them can be adjusted while remaining in spec.
