I’ve seen a documentary where they said that some of these cases involved people with a sleep disorder. It involves a disordered REM sleep.
I’ve had sleep paralysis a handful of times and in a world without a common understanding of sleep paralysis it would have really freaked me out afterward. That probably contributes to the abduction thing, along with psychological trauma, and other factors.
I’ve had sleep paralysis, also. That sh1t is terrifying. Your sleepy-time brain can make up some pretty gnarly stuff.
Part of the function of dreams is to assimilate experiences from your waking life. Your brain uses your existing memories to contextualize new events and ultimately synchronize them into your overall being. If you’re trying to process difficult stuff IRL, your brain is going to use previous negative experiences as the “dream fodder” to absorb the new stuff.
To me it felt like different parts of my brain asleep and awake at the same time when they shouldn’t have been. Extreme fear and panic from my lizard brain, with my consciousness trying to make sense of what was going on, and my motor control fully asleep. I do subscribe to the “defragging” theory of dreams though. I’m also interested in the metaphysical and esoteric but in hindsight the experiences seem to be entirely physiological, like an orchestra out of time for just a moment.
