Borzoi, Apache, and Alex McNabb jump head first into the fog of war as they examine the terror of John Carpenter's The Thing.

I had hoped for a little bit more of an analysis from the perspective of The Thing as the Jew, regardless of what Carpenter knows or doesn’t know is irrelevant to me. There were some breadcrumbs that left me hungry for more, like when Borzoi made the salient point that in this movement you often have moments of paranoia and doubt. And yeas, I remember the first time I watched The Thing and the Norwegians are hunting the dog-thing, I mean, I had a vague idea what the movie was about but so it came so it was just sort… Read more »
here’s the thing
They announced a remake for The Thing earlier this year. I don’t think it’s going to have an all-female cast, but there won’t be a lot of white men in it, that’s for sure. I expect stronk independent wammen, low unemployment americans, mystery meats.
Hey, they already crammed prequel full of that, so it’s not an expectation, it’s a guarantee.
Speaking of the prequel, I actually thought it would have been rather cool to see an all Norwegian prequel of the Thing, in vein with the 1982 version, but of course not, the protagonists all had to be American and a bunch of gashes and minorities had to be added to the mix.
Nice cover art! HAHA! One thing ( pun intended) that was touched on was the consequences of replication and the fluid nature of identity. How could the entity maintain a central identity through multiple iterations and taking on the faults of the replicated unless of course the entity was like a conscious bitcoin algorithm. That idea is what scared the hell out of me when I first saw this film. Great talk guys. Always entertaining.
Two dueling pieces of the best cover art on the site so far. Really great episode. I never knew how badly it was received or how good movies were in 1982. That was a trip. Such a classic film, seems to boggle the mind how the man that made this also made Escape from LA & Ghosts from Mars.
Greatest horror movie ever made
The cover art with Moike is one of the funniest I’ve ever seen on this site.
Funniest cover-art I’ve seen so far…
Has the poz button reviewed “They Live” yet?
My conspiracy take about the prequel for “The Thing”, it was made with the intention to be a soft form of censorship. Most people will see the newest shit first, in the future, people searching for “The Thing” will watch the remake first. This way they spoil it for themselves, and they do not watch the first. This way there is no less movie were the theme of the fog of war is easily accessible, same for deception (in any meaningful way), manipulation, psychological games etc. These are the tools jews use to attain power and influence institutions. In the… Read more »
That cover art… I’m dying.
Do the first two Alien movies next. Also do the first Predator!
Forthcoming remake with POC wahmens cast: The Thang
Subsequent sequel: The Thang II: We Wuz Thangz
The defibrillator scene still freaks me out even though I know it’s coming.
I love how your discussion of the movie is longer then the movie itself.
D:
LOL. Nah.
There’s a highly compelling, if flawed, documentary from 1982 called The Killing of America that touches on the same themes you were discussing as being central to Carpenter’s early work, though in more of a stylistic way than an analytical. The pervasive sense of dread emerging throughout the country, the advent of the serial killer/mass murderer as a cultural figure, etc. It doesn’t do a very good job of analyzing the potential causes of these phenomena, instead making some tepid gun control arguments, but that can be easily overlooked as the footage speaks quite well for itself. The footage itself… Read more »
Considering the time the movie takes place and the age of McCready, it’s likely he’s a former military pilot who served in Vietnam. I think that adds insight into why he’s up there in the first place. He’s escaping from society or running from his past experiences and you can’t get much further from those things than Antarctica. He’s clearly a radical individualist. All the men at the station, for various reasons, have willingly sought social isolation. They’re all running from something. We’re dealing with anti-social nerdy scientist, emotionally damaged veterans and 60s conspiracy theorist burnouts. The point is that… Read more »
This is my fav movie.
Can’t wait to listen I’m really loving all the cross show work and guests as of late. Really feels like a golden period for TRS every single show is fucking great.
Dark days at TRS. Golden dark days…
I’m unemployed and still can’t keep up with all the content.
Bump.
No cellphones or negros in the theater during the show.
Anyone else miss the Jim intro?
I wish long-suffering Jim all the best. He was a good man. Braden too.
Still is, he’s concentrating on being a husband and a father these days
I miss the “Perviously on the Poz Button” bits
Best horror movie of all time. Best poz button?
