I’ll be doing a bit of an apprenticeship for dairy farming this summer after my other job, what are your thoughts on dairy and raising animals? I’m canadian but from my own research I’ve gathered that there is a reasonably large demand for selling quality raw milk in the states compared to the availability (I know people who drive like 3 hours to their local farm to get it).
I think raw milk is illegal to some extent in the US but farmers markets and CSA’s are in pretty big demand.
in some states its outright illegal, but most states allow cow shares and direct to consumer purchases but not retail, some states allow retail sale. Overall, pretty promising.
However, in canada, as raw milk cant be purchased legally, I buy my raw milk from a lady who has her husband drive like 12 hours total and buys like 100 liters (frozen) at once.
Be careful of the state you pick if you do decide to go into raw milk. The problem is earning a living will be difficult. You’ll make some money but will need another source of income and selling raw milk even via shares opens you up to some crazy fed oversight. Feds have raided even harmless hippy types doing everything by the letter of the law.
