Jazz, great overview of the Kobe Beef helicopter. A couple of notes: first, the pilot, if he was competent, a big if I know, would not have fully loaded the vehicle with fuel. Range, 350 mmi, trip roughly 100 nmi. Extra fuel would have cost $$. Second, max speed, 155 mph, so that chopper was FLYIN’ when it hit the mountain…

Perfectly reasonable situation for special VFR, especially if you don’t have an instrument rating. You got caught in bad weather, you didn’t fly in spite of it. I’m sure you also weren’t exceeding MTOW and violating FAA regs.

IDENT means push the little button on your radar transponder to flag you on ATC radar, to distinguish you from all the other VFR traffic squawking 1200. IFR traffic has assigned transponder codes which you get on IFR clearance on takeoff.
If you are counting on ATC radar to tell you where you are you are already fucked.

I have a pretty good background in general aviation. On paper a commercial, instrument rated, multi engine, properly certified and IFR current pilot with 8000 hours should be fine. Before each flight pilots are supposed to do a weight and balance worksheet and confirm that the gross weight and moment will be in the safe envelope for the flight, including changes from fuel burn. The issue is not passenger count, but weight and where they sit. Bad judgment, lack of situational awareness, continuing into adverse wx, and especially get-home-itis can get you. Without going into details I happen to know more than the average person about the 737 max issues currently going on. The max was upgraded with GE LEAP engines as opposed to the original 737 that used primarily cfm-56 or some variants with Pratt & Whitney JT8D engines. There’s a reason this matters. The pilot was probably Lebanese, Jazz. I thought it was Iranian ’cause “Zobayan” sounds Iranian to me, but then I found there are 70 people in Lebanon with a similar surname, Zoboyan. Anyway, good work finding that information on the passengers on the chopper exceeding capacity.
