I favor the paid maternity leave, 2 or 3 months. This is only happening a few times per woman per lifetime, bigger companies should be able to soak this up. In the US people job hop a lot and this works against the paid leave argument.
In Sweden, it is six months, paid. Some years ago I was there and some women told me that the generous paid leave mandate meant that companies did not want to hire women of childbearing years because they would just take the leave and quit or change jobs. Just one data point for you.
